Fresh Sound's popular series of thematic compilations of Hank Jones' leader recordings for the Savoy is now back with its third installment. This time it is a collection with Donald Byrd. Hank (b. 1918) and Byrd (b. 1932) were both born in Michigan. Although their ages are far apart, they play well together and give us a swingy performance. In the jam session-like ( 2 ), the enigmatic trumpeter Matti Dice plays as well as Byrd. In ( 7 ), the young Herbie Mann shows his true potential as a jazz flutist.
