¡Schoenberg: Symphonic Poem "Pelleas und Melisande"
¡Pierre Boulez (conductor)

 Description
[Machine Translation] Pelleas et Melisande" is a work from the late Romantic period, before Schoenberg entered the atonal period. The coupling is a prelude to the first act from Wagner's opera "Tristan und Isolde," which is said to have led to the collapse of functional harmony. 85-year-old Boulez, a leading figure in contemporary music, conducts the Mahler-Jugend Orchestra in this disc. Pelleas et Melisande is Schoenberg's only symphonic poem, composed between 1902 and 1903. The original plan was to write an opera like Debussy's, but he wrote it first and it was a great success, so it became a symphonic poem in the end. Like Debussy's opera of the same name and the incidental music of Faure and Sibelius (both arranged as a suite), it is based on Materlank's Pelleas et Melisande. The Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchestra was founded in 1986 by Claudio Abbado, who serves as its musical director. Members must be under 26 years of age, and auditions are held annually (the Mahler Chamber Orchestra was founded by former members of the Jugend Orchestra).
