The label has produced many jazz classics, including Keith Jarrett's "The Cologne Concert" (1975), Chick Corea's "Return to Forever" (1972), and Pat Metheny's "Bright Size Life" (1976). In 1984, he broadened his genre of music to include classical music. In 2023, at the age of 80, Eicher will continue to record more than 20 new works a year, making him one of the most active composers in the pursuit of music. In conjunction with the release of the new ECM Revisits series to commemorate the 55th anniversary of ECM, the label is releasing an encore pressing of its ECM in the 21st Century series, originally released in 2022. This series will introduce ECM in its current form, with a focus on artists who are currently active at the forefront of the field. This is the second ECM release in 2019 by a UK-ordered pianist/composer. Downes, who made his ECM debut in 2018 with "Obsidian," a mostly solo church organ piece, takes over further storytelling, expanding and developing his process and core ideas in this second ECM piece. This work places the organ in a broader context, but incorporates the piano into a larger compositional picture. In addition to long-time Downs associates such as saxophonist Tom Challenger, cellist Lucy Railton, and drummer Seb Rochford, the album also marks the first musical encounter with Norwegian guitarist Stian Vesterhoofus.
