¡Surfin' Pleasures
¡The Routes
Description
[Machine Translation] The Routes, who arranged surf music for two previous albums, Kraftwerk and Buzzcocks, will now turn their attention to Joy Division. The Routes have been working on a series of "tributes" to Joy Division, rather than just covers. The Routes' style is to take subtle hints of melody and rhythm from the original songs and reinterpret and rearrange them in their own unique way, playing Joy Division's music in a different musical style with respect and affection. In this album, 12 classic Joy Division songs are interpreted, rethought, and arranged as 60's surf guitar instrumentals. The Ventures, Dick Dale, The Shadows, The Trashmen, Takeshi Terauchi, Link Wray, The Surfaris, and The Astronauts are some of the representative images. This wild surf music will take you on a journey around the world. A Means To An End" and "Ice Age" take us to the background music of 60's drag racing movies, "Transmission" to the classic Astronauts sound, and "Digital" to an arrangement reminiscent of a beach party. Of course, you don't have to be a fan of Joy Division or surf music to enjoy this album. The record cover is a collaboration between British design icons Peter Saville and Malcolm Garrett, and is a remake of Peter Saville's design for Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures". The lines on the cover, reminiscent of Bridget Riley's Op Art, are not strong radio waves, but the sound waves of a reverb tank (as you will see when you listen to the album.) Joy Division is a sublime artist. Will this album be a blasphemy or will it be sublimated in a new interpretation? The decision is yours! One thing is for sure, The Routes have released another mind-blowing future cult classic to the world!
