Description
This is undoubtedly Cameron Crowe's best film to date. Based on Crowe's real life experience as a 15-yr-old whiz kid rock journalist, this film is brilliantly written and directed by Crowe himself, and acted by the entire cast. Patrick Fugit personifies the young Crowe character (William H. Miller) with charm and energetic enthusiasm, while Frances McDormand plays his over-protective but very loving mom. The film also became a star-making vehicle for Kate Hudson and Billy Crudup. Though Hudson herself is just as great as the critics are raving about, her character rings a bit more fictitious than the rest. In comparison, Billy Crudup's character is so real, you'd think you're watching a real-life documentary while he's on screen. He plays Russell Hammond, the leader of the band with whom William has an assignment to finish an extensive interview with. Jason Lee is surprisingly good as the band's lead singer who, in the tradition of real-life rock bands, constantly fights with Crudup's lead guitarist. Also worthy of mention is Philip Seymour Hoffman's absolutely brilliant portrayal of the late real-life rock journalist, Lester Bangs. This edition contains both the original theatrical version and Cameron Crowe's 160-minute Director's Cut, also known as "The Bootleg Cut".
