¡GHOSTS OF MARS
¡Movie
Description
Written and directed by John Carpenter (who also did the music as usual), the sci-fi action flick could be described as "Assault on Planet 13," "Escape from Mars," or "Big Trouble on Little Red Planet." It's a 120% JC film (meaning either you love it or hate it) starring Ice Cube ("Three Kings") as Snake Plissken's Mars-bound cousin, Natasha Henstridge ("Species") who is quite good here, even reminding us a bit of Carpenter fave Jamie Lee Curtis (Henstridge got the part only a few days prior to the first shooting day after Courtney Love left), Jason Statham ("Snatch" "The Transporter"), Clea DuVall ("Girl, Interrupted") with Pam Grier as Henstridge's openly gay superior officer (as an in-joke I think, since she played a man-turned-woman in JC's "Escape from L.A.") and the perennially underrated Joanna Cassidy (who was great in "Blade Runner" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"). Pam Grier's line "Who goes there?" is the title of the 1938 book by John W. Campbell on which JC's (and Howard Hawks') "The Thing" was based. Artists who took parts in the soundtrack include the likes of Anthrax, Buckethead, Steve Vai, Elliot Easton, et al. Some excellent bonus material.
Special Features:
Audio commentary from John Carpenter and Natasha Henstridge, video diary "Red Desert Nights," special effects (SFX) deconstructions, featurette "Scoring Ghost of Mars," & more
