¡Daikaiju Varan (VARAN THE UNBELIEVAVLE)
¡Sci-Fi Live Action

 Description
Legend has it that America's ABC-TV network commissioned Toho Studios to produce a monster film for TV. The movie was to be shot in black and white at the standard TV aspect ratio, but almost halfway into production, ABC-TV bailed on the project, forcing Toho to finish the rest of the film for theatrical release. As a result, the remainder of the movie had to be shot in the anamorphic format of Tohoscope, while the footage that was already shot had its tops and bottoms cropped in order to match. When the film reached the U.S., it was butchered beyond belief, used as stock footage for a new film shot in Hollywood starring Myron Healy ("V") with the film's Japanese stars reduced to mere extras. The hallmark of this film was one of Akira Ifukube's greatest scores for a Toho kaiju film, yet only a few seconds survived in the American version. Also cut was the sequence where Varan flies, making this one of Toho's truly lost classics.
