 Description
A young Goethe studying at the University of Strasbourg is expected by his father, a great jurist, to enter the legal profession. Yet he cannot suppress the surging passion he feels for writing poetry. Neglecting his studies and immersing himself in creative work, Goethe draws the concern of his father, who orders him to work as a trainee at a local court in the rural town of Wetzlar. Goethe heads to Wetzlar with a gloomy heart. After beginning work at the court, he befriends Wilhelm, who has not been able to fit in with the other trainees. Then, at a Judicial Association party the two sneak into together, Goethe meets a beautiful young woman named Lotte in a fateful encounter and falls in love at first sight. Meanwhile, Wilhelm finds himself captivated by the bewitching Margarete, even though he knows she is a married woman. The next day, Goethe visits Lotte's home together with Wilhelm. As fellow lovers of art, Goethe and Lotte are strongly drawn to each other. However, Lotte's father, wishing for his daughter's stable future, is proceeding with her engagement to the capable and strict lawyer Kestner. While considering her father's feelings, Lotte finds her feelings for Goethe growing beyond control. In a vividly green meadow, Lotte asks Goethe to weave poetry for her. Goethe hesitates, but soon words begin to pour forth without end, and he feels the wings of creation spreading infinitely. Captivated by his talent, Lotte is swept away, and Goethe becomes convinced that this love is everything worth living for. But for these young people who seek to live by passion, an inescapable reality begins to press down upon them. Bonus video includes rehearsal footage.
