 Description
[Machine Translation] Sadao Yamanaka, an unparalleled master of Japanese literature, has finally produced a moving masterpiece! --A tenement house in Fukagawa, Edo. Unno Matajuro (Kawarazaki Chojuro), a ronin, asks Mori Sanzaemon (Tachibana Kozaburo) for an official position, but does not receive a good answer. Meanwhile, Shinzo (Nakamura Wanemon), a hairdresser who lives next door to the wall, visits Shirakoya to pawn his tools of the trade, but gets rubbished and ends up kidnapping the Shirakoya's daughter Okoma (Kiridate Noboru)... Sadao Yamanaka, who made his directorial debut in 1932 after working as a scenario writer, made his first film for P.C.L. He insisted on realistic images by building a 36-meter-long stone wall for a single cut and constructing a set of a tenement house that passes through a stage. Sadao Yamanaka made 26 period films in just five and a half years, all of which were well received, but shortly after the completion of this film, he was drafted into the Sino-Japanese War and died of illness in China. This film became his last work.
