Description
John Carpenter's follow-up to his first huge hit "Halloween" is an authentic ghost story of the Carpenter kind. As with his excellent "Assault on Precinct 13," the set up is akin to Howard Hawks' western classic, Rio Bravo in which a small town is threatened by evil forces. This set up re-emerges again and again in Carpenter's films (like Prince of Darkness, They Live, The Thing and Ghosts of Mars) but here, the structural simplicity and the eerie atmosphere are combined to best effect. Carpenter's own music score adds to the awesome atmospheric fright. Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis are the cool, and typical Carpenter heroines, and their co-stars include Janet Leigh (Curtis' real-life mother, and "Psycho" veteran), Hal Holbrook, Tom Atkins, and John Houseman in an amusing cameo. Carpenter himself appears uncredited in a cameo.
