On her mother's deathbed, she learns that Eiko's father was Takehiko Kawada, a leading figure in the world of musical composition. Eiko visits Kawada and tells him of Kiku's death, but Kawada cannot call Eiko his daughter due to family reasons and has to send her away. Kawada's wife, Tsuneko, is the daughter of Tajima, his former teacher who is now retired but still a major figure in the world of music composition, and their daughter Yachiyo (Michiyo Kigure) is the daughter Tsuneko had with her lover. Eiko meets Seki ( Toshio Hosokawa ), an up-and-coming composer, and moves in with him at his apartment.
