This is a rare recording made for CBS in 1985, before he started recording for RCA. Davis's weighty performance in Munich's Herkulessaal, with its outstanding acoustics, is more German than German in its musical density and depth of expression, and ideally reproduces the passionate drama that Beethoven entrusted to each of his works. This is a favorite disc of the audio critic Okihiko Kanno, who used it as a tuning disc for his audio system, and it is coupled with the recording of the Leonore Overture No. 2 from the same venue for the 1995 RCA recording of the complete Fidelio.
