¡Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox
¡Marquis Hill

 Description
[Machine Translation] The latest release from one of the finest trumpeters of our time, Marquis Hill. Believing that black music is a vast continuum, he has produced a series of masterpieces combining elements of contemporary and classical jazz with R&B/hip-hop/neo-soul and other tastes, but this is his best work to date, integrating all of his experience and connections. This album began when Marquis Hill, feeling that "jazz musicians were playing less original music from other musicians than before and losing the opportunity to learn more," called on his friends and colleagues in Chicago to continue the tradition. He asked them to write songs with him in mind, and in addition to Joel Ross and his core quintet, Marcus Strickland, Jeff Parker, Ernest Dawkins, Chicago rapper SABA, and others contributed songs, as well as his own arrangement of Gary Bartz's classic "Libra. The album is an 18-song masterpiece that also includes the Gary Bartz classic "Libra," which was originally arranged by the band. Recording members include the current core quintet of Joel Ross (vib) / Michael King (p) / Junius Paul (b) / Corey Fonville (ds), who is active with Butcher Brown and others, as well as Makaya McRaven (ds) / Samora Pinderhughes ( (vo) / Jeff Parker (g) / Josh Johnson (as) / Gerald Clayton (p). Also featured are Manasseh (vo), who has become a major player in the Chicago R&B scene since his debut in 2022, female saxophonist Caroline Davis (as), DC's Christie Dashiel (vo), who also participated in 2019's "Love Tape," and a variety of other artists. This is a masterpiece album filled with all kinds of black music like a juke box.
