 Description
[Machine Translation] Janacek's late masterpiece! The Salzburg Festival in 1998, commemorating the 70th anniversary of his death, presents a remarkable new production of Janacek's late masterpiece. This verismo-like opera by Czech composer Leos Janacek (1854-1928) is set in a cold village on the Volga River in the 1860s and depicts the tragedy of a strict family system. The melody and rhythm are easy to understand, making use of the local Moravian dialect, and the melody, which can be described as sensual, is a masterpiece rich in lyricism. The newly staged version by Martaler included here is a remarkable and controversial work, especially in terms of its direction. However, as the production will be screened again this year and next, it is now being recognized as a masterpiece. In this production, the six scenes in three acts are performed consecutively without scene changes.
