 Description
Producer George Pal's (some call him the George Lucas of the 1950's) science fiction classic is a modernized version of H.G. Wells' novel, set in America. Unlike the book that features alien vehicles which are monstruous tripods walking towards London (which was later realized in the British TV series called "The Tripods" based on the book by another author), the film's art department designed an awesome looking flying machine which was a clever move since getting gigantic tripods to walk around convincingly in 1953 must have been nearly impossible. (Ray Harryhausen - the master of stop motion animation - was probably still too young and learning his craft.) The alien craft looked so cool that it was reused in the spin-off TV series made 35 years later in the late '80s as well as on director Byron Haskin's own 1964 movie, "Robinson Crusoe on Mars."
