Written and directed by David Mamet who is perhaps one of the best modern American screenwriters. It's a suspenseful mystery that betrays many of the thriller conventions, and just when you think you know everything you oughta know about the story, it pulls the rug from under your feet to reveal an unexpected floor design to stare at in amazement! Starring Campbell Scott, Rebecca Pidgeon, Steve Martin, Ben Gazzara, et al. It somewhat resembles a pretty good made-for-TV movie called "The Water Engine" which was also written by David Mamet and made several years earlier.
