The story based on a novel by one of the foremost novelists of 20th-century Japan, Osamu Dazai. The story is set in Tokyo, the dark years of the early postwar era. A talented novelist Oya (Tadanobu Asano) is a dissolute man who is mired in debt and cheats on his wife, Sachi (Takako Matsu). One day, he shirks the alcohol charges and steals money from a pub.
