¡Shostakovich: Six Romances . Scottish Ballad . Michelangelo Suite
¡Gerald Finley (bass-baritone), Thomas Sanderling (conductor), Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra

 Description
[Machine Translation] Gerald Finley ( 1906-1975 ), a famous Canadian baritone, made his debut with ONDINE. His choice for his debut with ONDINE was, surprisingly, a collection of Shostakovich's songs. However, the "Six Romances" is based on the lyrics of English poets such as W. Lowry, R. Burns, and W. Shakespeare, and is certainly a work with which Finley has a lot of sympathy. This orchestral accompaniment version is a recent discovery, in which Shostakovich himself expanded the originally chamber accompaniment parts to a full orchestra, allowing the listener to appreciate the music with even greater precision. The "Michelangelo Lieder," one of his later works, is a rare example of a song cycle that is sung not in Russian but in the original Italian language. This version is the world premiere recording. Finley's wonderful singing is beautifully supported by Shostakovich's authority, Thomas Sanderling.
