¡Issa No Renku
¡Takahashi Junko

 Description
[Machine Translation] Issa Issa (1763-1827), a well-known Edo-period haiku poet along with Basho and Buson, is said to have composed approximately 20,000 haiku during his lifetime, but it is not well known that he left behind a total of 250 volumes of renku. Renku is a form of Japanese literature in which long 5-7-5 phrases and short 7-7 phrases are alternately added to each other, and the two phrases are read together with the previous one as a series of two phrases to enjoy the multilayered nature and changes in language. In this classic essay, the author, who has shared the joys of renku through his own experiences, introduces the life of Issa, who was not well off at home, and his renku style, while commenting on six of Issa's best-known renku poems.
