Description
[Machine Translation] Japan was hit by an unprecedented food shortage. Toshiko Tachibana is 19 years old. Itohan, from an old family in Osaka, becomes a teacher at a national school. While hoping to somehow help children who are dying from malnutrition, she learns of the existence of ponkashi, a type of confectionery that allows children to eat large amounts of grain using little fuel. With a strong sense of mission, Toshiko sets out on her own to build a ponkashi-making machine in Kitakyushu, where there is a steel mill, and struggles to start up a factory. This is a moving story of a real-life woman who overcame hardships, saved children from starvation, and gave jobs to demobilized people selling ponkacakes.
