The four movements, in which the same theme is developed, are filled with a sense of hidden tenderness, just as in the style of Schumann in his later years. Wittmann, one of the greatest clarinetists and composers of our time, has taken Schumann's world and re-created it as a new fairy tale for the 21st century. It is an interesting work with a very modern sense of anxiety and darkness. The other two Schumann works on this disc are also performed with great care by virtuosos Tabea Zimmermann and Danesh Vahryon, as well as by Wittmann himself.
