One day, Dexter, a boy who has AIDS thanks to a blood transfusion he received as a child, moves in next door. Unable to go to school, Dexter spends his days playing by himself in the garden. Eric, another lonely boy, begins to interact with Dexter, even though his mother forbids him to do so, and the two of them ride a tire tube down the river and go to the supermarket in town, but the presence of an AIDS patient in the store becomes the talk of the town. When Eric learns in the newspaper that a doctor in New Orleans has developed a cure for AIDS, he invites Dexter to join him on a trip down the Mississippi River in a homemade raft connected to a tire tube. At night, while sleeping under the night sky, Dexter confides that he sometimes dreams of being at the edge of the universe.
