Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy first shared the stage together at the Five Spot in 1958, and often performed together in Europe before settling there in the 1960s. Lacy's lilting soprano sax and Waldron's black spirituals and Schubert-like melancholy may seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum, but they are in perfect harmony, with Waldron's devotion to Thelonious Monk as a catalyst. This recording was made at Waldron's last live performance, held on September 30, 1995, at the Desingel Art Center in Antwerp, Belgium, in celebration of his 70th birthday. Bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Andrew Cyril joined the band.
