Description
[Machine Translation] An ambitious masterpiece by Jean Renoir, known for numerous masterpieces such as Picnic, The Great Vision, The Rules of the Game, and French Cancan. Based on a true crime case, this love-hate drama between a man and a woman is set in the south of France and depicted with a touch of realism by Renoir. The lead role of Toni is played by Charles Bravette (The Faceless Eye). Marcel Pagnol, a playwright and film director, serves as executive producer, and Luchino Visconti, later to become a master director, assists him. The film, which features many non-professional actors and was shot almost entirely on location and recorded simultaneously, is also known to have had a major influence on Italian neo-realismo. --A town with many immigrants near Marseille. Toni, an Italian migrant, falls in love with the voluptuous Josefa, but she marries Albert, the foreman of the quarry where Toni works. Toni joins Marie, who has taken a liking to him, but Marie attempts suicide when she learns that Toni's heart is with Josefa. Meanwhile, Josepha steals property from Albert and tries to escape, but Albert finds her and kills her. Toni tries to save her by making Albert's corpse look like a suicide...
