Description
Gladiator, the multiple Oscar winning film of 2000, owes a lot to Ben Hur, the multiple (11) Oscar winning film of 1925. Produced 75 years before Gladiator, the older 'nobleman-turned-slave-turned-gladiator' film not just still looks impressive, but makes you wonder how could they create such spectacular images in 1925 when there were no computer graphic special effects or any other technical fx to speak of. Even die-hard Star Wars fans gotta admit the seat-gripping desert "pod race" scene in Phantom Menace is essentially a reprise of Ben Hur's awsome chariot race sequence, and again they did that through sheer ingenuity and chutzpah (and probably lots of coffee too) but with no CGI FX!
