 Description
[Machine Translation] A Changing Town, Unchanging People People have a place to return to. The long-awaited film adaptation of Naoki Prize-winning author Hideo Okuda's original story about people trying to make a living in a changing hometown! --Yasuhiko Mukoda (Katsumi Takahashi) and his wife Kyoko (Yasuko Tomita) run a barbershop in Chikuzawa, which they inherited from their parents. Most of the barbershop's customers are elderly people from the neighborhood. After work, he spends his days complaining about the changing town with his classmates from junior high school, Shinji Segawa (Itao Itsuji), who runs a gas station, and Shuichi Taniguchi (Kondo Yoshimasa), who runs an electronics store, at a nearby snack bar called "Showa Shitamachi". One day, his son Kazumasa ( Shirasu Jun ), who has been working in Tokyo, returns home and says he will quit his job and take over the store. Kyoko is honestly happy to hear Kazumasa's words, but Yasuhiko feels uneasy as his own past comes back to haunt him. Unaware of Yasuhiko's feelings, Kazumasa talks about his dream of eventually opening a cafe in the store, and starts working part-time at a nearby transportation company to earn money to attend barber school. As Wacho and Yasuhiko continue their life as father and son for the first time in a long time, a meeting is held at the city hall with business owners from the chamber of commerce and industry to discuss regional development. At the meeting, Ryohei Sasaki ( Shunsuke Tanaka ), who has been transferred from the central government, hears opinions from Kazumasa and other young people about how to revitalize Chikuzawa in the future. While opinions such as the opening of a community FM station are raised, Yasuhiko compares the reality of depopulating Chikuzawa to terminal care, and questions Sasaki who encourages Kazumasa and other young people in the name of regional development. However, Kazumasa rebels against Yasuhiko's denial of their wishes. Amidst the unsettled atmosphere, the situation is somehow resolved through Taniguchi's mediation, but Kazumasa is then confronted with the current situation of the town as Yasuhiko describes it. Soon after, a movie starring popular idol Ohara Zero (Yabuki Nako) is to be shot in Chikuzawa, and the town comes to life at once. This filming triggers a change in Yasuhiko and the people of the town.
