Description
[FOX Super Price (priced-down) DVD Series] This 1962 masterpiece from John Frankenheimer is a timeless spy thriller about a Korean War veteran and the platoon he supposedly saved, one, or possibly more of whom might be brainwashed puppet agents of Communist controllers. Both Frank Sinatra and Laurence Harvey deliver topnotch performances, but Angela Lansbury completely steels every scene she's in. She plays Harvey's mother while in real life, she was only 3 years older than him. The rest of the great cast includes Janet Leigh, Henry Silva, and James Gregory. The film spawned several knockoffs utilyzing the same "brainwashed agent" conspiracy theory, among which, the 1977 Don Siegel-directed "Telefon" is probably the best, though not nearly as suspenseful or witty as this Frankenheimer classic. I can't help but mention that John Frankenheimer is among my top 5 favourite filmmakers. Even though I don't consider all his films great, I have nothing but admiration for this talented and industrious craftsman (and yes, there's an autographed picture of him on my desk). Incidentally, he's working on "Exorcist: Dominion" with Liam Neeson playing the young Father Merrin, the Max von Sydow character from the original film.
