Description
[Regular-Priced Edition] It's well known that falling in love with Akira Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai,' Yul Brynner acquired the rights to remake the Kurosawa film in the U.S.. But it's not all that known that Anthony Quinn was originally trying to make it and asked Brynner to join him. The film boosted Steve McQueen's career but few people know he desperately wanted to play the young 'Chico' character (the equivalent played by Toshiro Mifune in the Kurosawa original), the role that eventually went to German actor Horst Buchholz. All those interesting facts are told during the feature-length audio commentary (from Eli Wallach, James Coburn and producer Walter Mirisch) of this DVD. It's a great fun to hear how Coburn got the exact role he wanted to play, or how Wallach bonded with his 'Mexican bandidos' off camera. Director John Carpenter may have nothing to do with this film, except that he's a well known Western buff and that all his films have a definite 'Western' attitude about them, and his succinct comment about this film included in the documentary section of this DVD kind of says it all; "Is it the greatest Western ever made? No. Is it the most entertaining Western ever made? YES!!". Besides, who can forget that great score.
