Description
[Machine Translation] A moving human drama by German female director M. von Trotta set in Nazi-occupied Berlin. --The film is set in modern-day New York City. After the death of her father, Hana's (Maria Schrader) mother, Root, begins to act inexplicably. She had never been particularly religious, but suddenly began to mourn in accordance with Jewish custom today. Hana is intrigued by her mother's childhood and decides to meet Lena, the woman who helped her mother flee Nazi-occupied Germany. When Hana goes to Berlin, Lena, now an elderly woman, tells her about the unbearable grievous events that happened to the young Lena ( Katya Lehman ) and her mother Ruth at the temporary Jewish camp on Rosenstrasse in the city. The film is based on the theme of intermarriage between Aryans and Jews, and is directed by Margarete von Trotta ("The Age of Lead"), a leading German female filmmaker, who, with careful and powerful strokes, brings to life the tragedy of her country and the drama of women who were at the mercy of racial and ethnic discrimination during World War II. Katya Lehman won the Best Actress Award for this film at the 2003 Venice International Film Festival.
