Kyo no dekigoto / A Day on the PlanetSpecial Edition
Japanese Movie
Description
In the tradition of Lawrence Kasdan's 1983 classic, "The Big Chill" (or John Sayles' underrated "The Return of the Secaucus 7" which may have inspired Kasdan to make his film), "Kyo no Dekigoto (A Day on the Planet)" is an ensemble drama set in Kyoto about seven college mates who gather at the apartment of one of their number, Masamichi, who is about to pursue an MA degree. Nakazawa is an spiring filmmaker who brings his gorgeous girlfriend, Maki (Rena Tanaka from "Drugstore Girl") and her motor-mouthed pal Kate. The scene of Kate immediately hitting on pretty boy, Kawachi, aggravate the other guys, grungy-haired Nishiyama in particular. Meanwhile, there's a news on TV about a thief who fell out of a window and trapped between two buildings, and later about a beached whale. The unforgettable night unfolds, and before long, the seven are reunited at the spot shown on TV to investigate one of the two news incidents (guess which one they choose). Directed by Japanese Academy Award winner, Isao Yukisada whose career has soared since the critical and commercial success of "Go" (2001), the comedy drama is an exercise in unforced naturalism, presenting real life-like characters, while the story itself develops with a ring of truth. Comes with a bonus disc (Disc 2) containing the making-of featurette, staff & cast interviews, cast diary, and more. Pictured disc(s).
