Description
Makeup artist Rick Baker is known for his penchant for "ape" makeups. One of his earliest works was to do a gorilla-like "missing link" makeup for his frined John Landis' low budget first feature, "Schlock." Since then, he has honed his artistry and has become an unparalleled artist of creature makeup effects, later winning several Oscars including one for "An American Werewolf in London" (again a film he did with Landis) and "Ed Wood," his earlier work with Tim Burton. In Burton's visually stunning re-imagined version of "Apes," Baker's Apes shine like stars (I nearly said well embellished monkey butts, but I didn't!) The film is well crafted, particularly in terms of special effects, and Burton's obvious deference to the 1968 original is quite appropriate considering the cult stature that film achieved over the years. While the 1968 film's brilliant twist ending guaranteed no sequel at the time (though it did spawn several + a couple of TV series), this one's surprise ending assures it.
