 Description
[Machine Translation] We couldn't even pronounce the teacher's name, but we were taught the joy of learning... A moving film based on a true story from the conservative American South. Told from the perspective of a white teacher, Conroy is assigned to a small island off the coast of South Carolina in the United States. The island is all black except for the owner of the general store, and the 21 elementary school students cannot write or pronounce the teacher's name "Conluck". Mrs. Scott, who is black, looks down on her students and tells them to be intimidated with whips while she teaches them, but Conroy talks with them as equals and promotes free and impromptu education. He walks outdoors to study nature, climbs a tree to talk about universal gravitation, and listens to classical music to convey Beethoven's intentions. Gradually, the students deepen their knowledge and discover the joy of learning. Conlac taught them to swim when he learned that they could not swim while living on the island, and took them to the town by boat and bus to experience the Halloween festivities, as they had never seen the town before. However, the conservative school board chairman finds Conlac's behavior to be excessive and fires him. The islanders, who adore Conluck, decide to protest...
