Description
In the first "Apes" film, the late Roddy McDowall gives an outstanding performance as Dr. Cornelius, the chimpanzee scientist opposite Charleton Heston (who makes a cameo appearance as an ape in Tim Burton's 2001 'reimagined' film) who plays the human lead. Like Burton's new film, the 1968 classic was based on Pierre Boulle's novel, but Rod Serling (the Twilight Zone creator) who co-wrote the screenplay gave the film a "thinking-man's sci-fi" appeal and and also one of the most shocking surprise endings ever filmed. Compared to the Burton film (which is, in terms of characters, just an ordinary action flick in disguise), the ape characters in this film have depth to them, and there's no singular bad guy/ape by killing whom everything turns rosy. The real "evil" lies somewhere else, as the ending so skillfully suggests. It spawned 4 sequels and 2 TV series (one live action, and one animated).
