Description
Filmed in 1956, the classic by Kon Ichikawa follows Mizushima, a soldier who has taught himself how to play Burmese harp. The war in the pacific is coming to an end, and the platoon has been on a run. Despite the looming defeat, the platoon is able to keep its spirits up by singing along to the harp Mizushima plays. After the platoon surrenders to the British, Mizushima attempts to convince other Japanese units determined to fight til the very end to surrender. Through his experience, through what he witnesses, and through his ultimate decision, horrors and the sorrow of the war is expressed. This is a monumental anti-war movie.
