Description
The first time I saw Clint Eastwood's "Firefox," I liked it but I had the impression I had seen the exact same movie before. Then I realized that what I remembered was an episode of "Joe 90," the Gerry Anderson Supermarionation show from the late 60's (maybe some people might have noticed from my previous reviews that I'm a huge fan of Anderson's shows). The Eastwood film is based on the best-selling novel by Craig Thomas, and I'm not sure if he "lifted" the plot from Joe 90 or not (it's too similar to be a coincidence though) but the movie itself is a thoroughly enjoyable and thrilling ride starring Eastwood himself as Joe "90" McClaine, I mean Major Mitchell Gant, a veteran pilot who is sent to Russia on a covert mission to steal their state-of-the-art jet fighter, codenamed Firefox. It even has a Star Wars parody bit in the climactic battle scene where Gant is reminded by the voice of a dead engineer echoing in his mind to "think in Russian" to control the jet, just like Obi-Wan reminding Luke to "use the Force."
