Masahisa Segawa ( Jazz Critic ) The jazz world is in the midst of a piano boom these days, and young female pianists in particular are in the spotlight, but in fact there are many mid-career pianists who have honed their skills as front-line pianists in many jazz groups since the 1990s, who have their own firm style and are developing unique and interesting performances. There are many mid-career pianists who have honed their skills as first-line pianists in many jazz groups in the 90s. Matsumoto Zengei, who is releasing a piano trio album this time, is one of them. He is currently quite busy as a pianist in trumpet player Hiroshi Murata's Bop Band, touring throughout Japan and belonging to Toshiyuki Miyama and New Hardware, but he is also actively involved in his own piano trio performances. In these performances, he surprises and delights listeners with his original compositions with a variety of musical ideas, as well as with his unique interpretation of standard tunes and other unique sounds. On this album, he teams up with his well-known bassist Moriyoshi Shibuya and drummer Manabu Hashimoto to perform four originals and six standards, and he aims to create a sound different from that of other groups by adding his own unique attention to harmony and rhythm. His piano playing, of course, but also Shibuya's bass and Hashimoto's drums, are of an extremely high musical standard, and through their sophisticated interplay, the trio creates a surprising and interesting sound that should be appreciated carefully.
