When Rentaro Inoko, a beloved activist for the liberation of the Burakumin, asks Ushimatsu if he too will remain a coward for the rest of his life, Ushimatsu follows his father's commandment, but rumors begin to circulate that Ushimatsu is a Burakumin. One day, Inoko falls victim to a deadly blade in the middle of his life. Ushimatsu finally makes up his mind, tells the principal everything, and is forced out of his position. Shiho, the daughter of a colleague, and her students see him off.
