The original story is "Whale God" by Koichiro Uno, winner of the 46th Akutagawa Award in 1961. Koichiro Uno was a popular author who later gained popularity for his sensual novels with a unique tone. Kaneto Shindo, who would later become a famous director of "Afternoon's Testament" and other works, adapted the screenplay. This is the first DVD release.
