Description
Set a decade after the end of the Civil War, Texas Rangers tells the story of the legendary Leander McNelly (Dylan McDermott) who is ordered by the government to reinstate the Texas Rangers to bring peace and justice to the Lone Star State. \The film is based on the book by George Durham, who was one of the last surviving members of McNelly's band. Durham is played by Ashton Kutcher ("Dude Where's My Car?"), but the film is centered around his best friend, Lincoln Rogers (James Van Der Beek of "Dawson's Creek" fame), an educated young man from Philadelphia who joins the Rangers after his family has been slain by the bandits led by the film's main villain, King Fisher (Alfred Molina). Robert Patrick delivers a standout performance playing McNelly's right hand, Sergeant Armstrong. While the film is not exactly faithful to the historical facts or background, especially when too much of modern sensibilities is displayed, and while it's in no way going to revitalize the virtually deceased Western genre singlehandedly, it still offers an enjoyable hour and a half for the genre fans.
