Description
In addition to being a superb actor, Sean Penn once again proves his brilliance as a director in The Pledge. Jack Nicholson (following 1995's "The Crossing Guard" also directed by Penn) plays veteran detective Jerry Black (not to be confused with Jack Black of Tenacious D) of the Reno, Nev. police force. On his last day with the force before his retirement, he is called to a scene where a young girl was found murdered. The good cop makes a pledge to find the killer, more to himself and "his soul's salvation" than to the slain girl's parents. This may sound like a typical set-up for a crime thriller we've seen million times before. However, messrs Penn and Nicholson are not at all interested in making an ordinary Hollywood thriller (i.e. with red herrings, new clues, obligatory shootings, chases, falls, and the final confrontation) and the film gears toward a deep character study. Its stellar cast also includes Robin Wright Penn, Sam Shepard, Benicio Del Toro, Helen Mirren, and Vanessa Redgrave. Nicholson is in top form here, and Jerry Black is definitely one of the most interesting characters he has played so far.
