¡J.S.Bach: St.John Passion (1749 version, with additional movements from 1725 version)
¡Ralf Otto (conductor), Mainz Bach Choir and Orchestra

 Description
[Machine Translation] J.S. Bach's "John Passion" is the Passion according to the New Testament "Gospel according to John". It is said that the first draft of the "John Passion" was performed on Good Friday after Bach's arrival at Thomas Kantor in Leipzig in 1724. 1725 saw a bold revision, replacing the opening with "O Mensch, bewein dein Sunde groB". In 1732, however, most of the music was restored, and "O Mensch" was later incorporated at the end of the first part of the "Matthew Passion". In 1749, his pupil Bamler copied the score for the 20 pages of the 1749 manuscript, and the unfinished parts were copied from the 1724 manuscript. This is sometimes referred to as the 1749 manuscript, and the performance here is based on this score. (This is not the fourth edition that Bach himself used in his 1749 performance. This album incorporates the changes and additions made in 1725, which give us a glimpse of the changes in John. The Mainz Bach Orchestra and the Mainz Bach Choir, with Hille Pahl on viola da gamba, perform this work.
