¡Weinberg: Symphony No.18
¡Andrew Balio (trumpet), Vladimir Landem (conductor), St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, St Petersburg Chamber Choir

 Description
[Machine Translation] One of the most important projects of Weinberg's later years (1919-1996) was "Reflections on World War II. This resulted in three symphonies: Symphony No. 17, "Memory," Symphony No. 18, and Symphony No. 19, "Bright May. The 18th is also, as the title suggests, colored by anti-war sentiment. It is a kind of oratorio with voices, with texts derived from poems and folk songs by the Soviet poets Sergei Orlov and Alexander Twardovsky. Each poem is filled with intense sadness and anger, and poses great problems for all. As usual, however, Weinberg does not coldly dismiss his listeners here, and perhaps the redeeming quality is that the music is somehow hopeful. The trumpet concerto was written much earlier, and its first performance was given on January 6, 1968 by the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Kirill Kondrashin with the virtuoso conductor Timofey Dokhsichel. It is an interesting work with cynical and grotesque passages scattered throughout, strongly influenced by Shostakovich, who was a great admirer of Weinberg at the time, and is highly recommended as an introduction to Weinberg.
