¡Zemlinsky: The Mermaid
¡New Zealand Symphony Orchestra

 Description
[Machine Translation] Two of Zemlinsky's works have recently been reappraised. The Little Mermaid, a symphonic fantasy inspired by Andersen's fairy tale, was premiered in Vienna in 1905 alongside Schoenberg's Pelleas et Melisande, but the audience preferred Schoenberg's work. He was so disappointed that he considered adding another movement to make it a "Death Symphony," but he never succeeded in doing so. The Sinfonietta, written almost 30 years later after his exile in the U.S., is a rather modern work with a cynicism reminiscent of Stravinsky and Hindemith.
